The Calligraphy Society of Victoria

A not-for-profit community group based in Melbourne, with regular in-person and online gatherings. Their mission is to foster a love and appreciation for the art of calligraphy.

The Calligraphy Society of Victoria (CSV) is a not-for-profit community group based in Melbourne, dedicated to fostering a love and appreciation for the art of calligraphy. The Society meets regularly both in person and online, offering workshops in calligraphy and related arts, hosting exhibitions, and promoting excellence in lettering practice.

Formed in 1981 by Jan Ferguson and her students from the Melbourne College of Decoration, CSV held its first exhibition in 1982. Since then, it has continued to showcase members’ work through exhibitions across Melbourne and online, while also hosting workshops led by both international tutors and the Society’s own talented members.

CSV’s membership includes professional and commercial calligraphers, educators, and hobbyists, with interests ranging from traditional scripts to experimental and contemporary lettering styles. From 2002 to 2019, the Society ran its highly regarded Summer School in Winter, a much-loved annual event that attracted participants from across Australia and New Zealand.

Thanks to the support of dedicated volunteers, the Calligraphy Society of Victoria continues to inspire, connect, and grow a vibrant community built around the enduring beauty of lettering. Visitors to the Melbourne Pen & Stationery Show are warmly invited to stop by the CSV table and enjoy a demonstration of calligraphy in action.
